Нью-Йорк, 1 декабря, 5 вагонов сошли с рельс в пригородном пассажирском поезде в районе Бронкс.
По предварительным данным полиции, погибли 4 человека, 67 пострадали, 11 из них в критическом состоянии.
Близлежащие улицы заполнены машинами скорой помощи и полиции, над местом аварии постоянно летают вертолеты, у берега находятся несколько пожарных катеров. Станция Spuyten Duyvil, до которой от места катастрофы менее ста метров, оцеплена. Число погибших и пострадавших может еще вырасти, спасательные работы на месте катастрофы продолжаются.
По предварительным данным расследования, у поезда отказали тормоза. Машинист сошедшего с рельс пассажирского поезда пояснил, что авария произошла из-за неисправности тормозной системы. Машинист уверяет, что пытался остановить поезд, но не мог из-за поломки тормозов.
Пассажиры отметили, что перед крушением поезд ехал гораздо быстрее, чем обычно.
